# Connect the ChatGPT desktop app and Codex to the PartFinder MCP server

> Add the PartFinder MCP server to the ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI and the Codex IDE extension through ~/.codex/config.toml and sign in with codex mcp login, or use your own API key from PARTFINDER_API_KEY.

The ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI and the Codex IDE extension read their MCP servers from one file,
`~/.codex/config.toml`. Add PartFinder there once and all three can use it. The server itself is
described in [MCP server](https://docs.partfinder.dev/mcp-server.md).

## Add the server and sign in

1. Add this entry to `~/.codex/config.toml`:

   ```toml theme={null}
   [mcp_servers.partfinder]
   url = "https://api.partfinder.dev/mcp"
   ```

2. Run this command:

   ```bash theme={null}
   codex mcp login partfinder
   ```

3. In your browser, sign in to PartFinder, choose your organization and approve the two
   [permissions](https://docs.partfinder.dev/mcp-server.md#the-two-permissions).

4. Restart the ChatGPT desktop app or Codex so it reads the file. In the Codex CLI, type `/mcp` to see
   your active MCP servers.

To use PartFinder in one project only, put the same entry in that project's `.codex/config.toml`. Codex
reads a project's file only when the project is trusted.

## Check the connection

Ask "Is PartFinder connected?". The agent calls the `ping` tool, which is free.

## Can I use my own API key?

Yes. Use this entry instead, and set `PARTFINDER_API_KEY` in your environment to your API key:

```toml theme={null}
[mcp_servers.partfinder]
url = "https://api.partfinder.dev/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "PARTFINDER_API_KEY"
```

`bearer_token_env_var` names the variable that holds the key, so the file holds no key. You do not run
`codex mcp login` with a key.
