# Connect Cursor to the PartFinder MCP server

> Add the PartFinder MCP server to Cursor with a .cursor/mcp.json file and sign in, or use your own API key from PARTFINDER_API_KEY.

Cursor reads a project's MCP servers from `.cursor/mcp.json`. The server itself is described in
[MCP server](https://docs.partfinder.dev/mcp-server.md).

## Add the server and sign in

1. Create `.cursor/mcp.json` in the project, or add the `partfinder` entry to the one you have:

   ```json theme={null}
   {
     "mcpServers": {
       "partfinder": {
         "url": "https://api.partfinder.dev/mcp"
       }
     }
   }
   ```

   To use PartFinder in every project, put the same entry in `~/.cursor/mcp.json` instead.
2. When Cursor opens the PartFinder sign-in page, sign in, choose your organization and approve the two
   [permissions](https://docs.partfinder.dev/mcp-server.md#the-two-permissions).

## Check the connection

Ask the agent "Is PartFinder connected?". It calls the `ping` tool, which is free.

## Can I use my own API key?

Yes. The file can refer to an environment variable, so it holds no key.

1. Set `PARTFINDER_API_KEY` in your environment to your API key.
2. Use this entry instead:

   ```json theme={null}
   {
     "mcpServers": {
       "partfinder": {
         "url": "https://api.partfinder.dev/mcp",
         "headers": {
           "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:PARTFINDER_API_KEY}"
         }
       }
     }
   }
   ```
